Officers responded to Lake Shore Drive around 12:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 8, for reports of a suspicious male pulling on car door handles, Nassau County police said. The Bureau of Special Operations assisted in canvassing the area and spotted a suspect matching the description fleeing on foot.

As officers attempted to detain him, the teen grabbed at his clothing, and a concealed black switchblade severely injured an officer’s hand, investigators said. The injured officer was taken to a nearby hospital and is in stable condition.

The 16-year-old is charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon 4th Degree, Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer, and Assault 2nd Degree. He was scheduled for arraignment at the Youth Section of First District Court in Hempstead later that day.
